Opting-in

Overview

The term "opting-in" holds the same meaning as "subscribing" and is the process by which mobile users indicate their willingness to receive ongoing messages of a pre-specified nature & frequency (i.e. a subscription service).

Double Opt-in Method

  1. The content provider advertises the service using traditional media and provides a call to action.
  2. The mobile user responds to the call by initiating a subscription via SMS, web-form, tick-box etc.
  3. The content provider responds with an MT SMS containing a description of the service and a request for the mobile user to confirm his/her willingness to participate.
  4. The mobile user then completes the process within 24 hours by responding with a confirmation command.
  5. The content provider responds with a "thank you" MT SMS confirming that the subscription process has been completed.

For example:

CTA To get movie release notifications on your mobile phone txt JOIN MOVIES to 71345.
MO Join Movies
MT MovieMaker std rate movie release notifications (up to 3/wk). Reply YES 2 join, txt STOP 2 stop & txt HELP 4 help. t&c:www.moviemaker.com
MO Yes
MT Thank you! You are now subscribed to MovieMaker (up to 3/wk) std rate movie release notifications.

Single Opt-in Method

  1. The content provider advertises the service using traditional media and provides a call to action.
  2. The mobile user responds to the call using an opt-in command.
  3. The content provider responds with a "thank you" MT SMS confirming that the subscription process has been completed and a brief description of the service itself.

For example:

CTA To get movie release notifications on your mobile phone txt JOIN MOVIES to 71345.
MO Join Movies
MT Thanx! You've subscribed to MovieMaker std rate movie release notifications (up to 3/wk). txt STOP 2 stop & txt HELP 4 help. t&c:www.moviemaker.com

Double Opt-in vs Single Opt-in

Whilst the single opt-in procedure may seem easier and less costly, the double opt-in procedure is the preferred choice because it provides maximum transparency. The mobile user is fully aware of the nature & frequency of the messages prior to the subscription process being completed and no room is left for any confusion.
